“On the eighth day of Christmas, Bell + Rogers gave to me…”
An 8-Goal Split Victory
Day 8 of our Christmas special takes us to a very special day a few months from now – Toronto FC’s CONCACAF Champions League clash with the LA Galaxy in March. An 8-goal split between the LA Galaxy and Toronto FC gives both sets of supporters an entertaining, eventful series.
In the first leg, Toronto FC draw the Galaxy 2-2, Joao Plata and Reggie Lambe scoring before Landon Donovan and Mike Magee level late on. Aron Winter will talk about rued chances, missed opportunities and poor defending in the final third. Toronto FC would get the jitters of the off-season out of the way, and, though they did not win this leg, they didn’t lose it either – this sets up the second leg perfectly.
The second leg sees dramatics galore, with Toronto FC going up ahead very early from the foot of Ryan Johnson. The Galaxy responds soon after, leveling the game at 1-1. Finally, a brace from Danny Koevermans in the second half puts Toronto at 3-1, finishing the series at 5-3, an 8-goal series split that sees Toronto advance through to the next stage in the Champions League.
Well, okay, fine. The Home-Away series between the Galaxy and Toronto FC doesn’t have to go down like this. The important point is that Toronto FC comes out with a win. However, I’d like to see at minimum 8 goals between these two sides, for the simple reason that a boring 1-0 game is exactly that – boring. Sure, I’d be content with that kind of outcome, but if Santa were listening, an 8-goal split would be infinitely more entertaining to the fans.
It would also provide Toronto FC fans with a great opportunity to travel to Los Angeles and witness a possible victory away from home, making the road trip to California that much sweeter.
“Oh, but Armen?” you may ask, “wouldn’t it be better if Toronto FC won at home in the Rogers Centre in front of a large, home crowd?”
It certainly would be something, however, going to Los Angeles and beating them at home sends a huge message to the league; LA went undefeated at home throughout 2011 – Toronto FC can end that streak. In any case, it’s all fantasy at this point. The important thing to remember – and ask for – is a Toronto FC victory, one way or another.
We will, however, wish for an 8-goal split between the two sides come March, in an attempt to defeat Los Angeles while keeping the series interesting throughout. Make it happen!!
