“On the seventh day of Christmas, Bell + Rogers gave to me…”
Joao Plata Resigning
Oh, the seventh day is a day of reflection, where we stop looking forward and look back at the 2011 campaign. There were many bright spots in the team of 2011, but none shone quite as bright as Joao Plata, our little number 7.
The young Ecuadorian winger from LDU Quito came into this league with a lot of expectations and a lot of concerns too. His size was cause for hesitation during the draft, where Toronto drafted him late. Yet he has proven himself and his abilities tenfold since being signed up by Winter and co.
His loan deal dictates a possible buy out at the end of his first year in MLS. This is what Toronto FC fans wish for this year – Toronto FC want Joao Plata back, that’s for sure, and Mariner has said talks are coming along well.
Resigning Joao Plata gives Toronto FC their fan favourite back, permanently. As long as the left-wing has Plata, the spark of Latin flare will remain. Rumours of a possible second player signing from LDU Quito to Toronto FC – centerback Geovanny Caicedo – have begun to circulate, and if they prove to be true, Toronto FC supporters can expect the same level of output (albeit defensively) as they do from Plata.
Signing Joao Plata permanently, and maybe getting a former teammate of his as well? Sounds like a Christmas present to me! Make it happen!
