The key to the ratings, as seems to be the logic on a scale of 1-10, is not to view it as a “grade”, as in a 6 would be a 60 or a C. The formula is that each player begins the game with a 5 and is the equilibrium from which their performance either improves or degrades moving in increments of .5.
Here is the breakdown of the starting XI:
Lars Hirschfeld – 5
Kept a clean sheet but wasn't his own best friend. Made life difficult for himself at times.
Ante Jazic – 6
Looked to get off to a good start, making an early overlap.
Mike Klukowski – 6.5
Looked to be a questionable inclusion at centre back instead of the left but grew into the game.
David Edgar – 5.5
Marking a bit questionable on occasions, but still made a good effort and played well enough to keep the opposition off the scoreboard.
Adam Straith – 5.5
One of Canada’s best performers. Good on the overlap and made some good passes.
Will Johnson – 5
Barely notice his presence until he was taken off in the second half.
Jonathan Beaulieu-Bourgault—5.5
A surprise inclusion as a central midfielder but performed well enough by all accounts. Would have liked to see him going forward a bit more, but played his defensive midfielder role well.
Julian de Guzman – 5
Barely made his presence felt. Caught in possession when holding onto the ball too long on occasion.
Dwayne De Rosario – 5
Looked good early but influence waned.
Josh Simpson – 5.5
Another who looked good early but grew frustrated as the night wore on.
Simeon Jackson – 5.5
To his credit, got into a number of scoring opportunities but frustratingly, couldn’t convert any of them. A full confidence Jackson would have bagged a few.
Subs
Olivier Occean – 5
Tosaint Ricketts – 5
