This just completed weekend of play in Europe marked the return to the pitch of a majority of the Canadian Internationals who saw their World Cup dreams crushed last Tuesday in Canada’s 8-1 defeat at the hands of Honduras.
In many cases, club managers for a number of those players who suited up for Canada over the International break elected not to play their Canadian Internationals, whether due to personal choice or a desire to give their Canucks a mental and physical break following the events of the past week. Generally, it was another weekend in which those Canadian players – Atiba Hutchinson, Milan Borjan, Marcel de Jong - who have been playing regularly at the club level again saw big minutes as European club play resumed across the pond.
In England
Norwich City striker Simeon Jackson was on the bench but did not see any minutes in his team’s big win over Premier League heavyweights Arsenal. David Edgar also made the bench but did not play as Burnley emerged victorious over Blackpool in Championship play.
Once again it was in the lower divisions that Canadian players played big minutes and played essential roles in winning efforts for their clubs. Iain Hume started again for Doncaster Rovers, who won 2-1 over Brentford , and Marcus Haber played a full ninety for Stevenage, who closed the gap on League One leaders Tranmere to four points with victory over local rivals MK Dons.
In Holland
Atiba Hutchinson again got the start at right back and delivered a solid effort for a PSV side that continued to click on all cylinders in the Eredivisie. With their comeback 3-2 victory over Willem II on Saturday, PSV maintained their position tied with Vitesse for second place in the table, now only one point behind leaders Twente.
Atiba Hutchinson and PSV come from behind to earn 3 points against Willem II:
