For the second straight game, Toronto FC dominated the game at home in a highly entertaining fashion and won the Trillium Cup, giving Columbus Crew their worst loss of the year in the process. The game was packed with crazy goals and off the posts action had everyone on the edge of their seats.
The Opening 45
Despite not controlling the ball, Toronto very much controlled the game.
Coming out of the gate, Toronto seemed dangerous when in the attacking end with a goal coming quickly thanks to Sebastian Giovinco blasting the ball off of Tsusha Endoh's back for what might be the MLS Goal of the Year for the most comical and magical of reasons as Endoh would get credited with the goal (#EndohMLSGoaloftheYear). Not long after, Giovinco scored a goal of his own after a nice little bit of teamwork.
As said before, Columbus dominated possession but were rarely able to get a shot on target and often looked like they were playing into Toronto's hands. They came out with a great deal of energy early, especially after Toronto's first goal but weren't able to make anything of it.
The Second Half
The second half played much like the first: Columbus had the ball but Toronto had the game. The only thing missing was goals. The arrival of Jozy Altidore into the game also meant Toronto had a great deal more ball possession.
Toronto really should have had a 4-0 lead by the 60-minute mark and Giovinco should probably have had hat-trick (not evening counting Endoh's goal). An excellent chance for him turned into the highlight of the game for Columbus as Steve Clark was able to make a splendid save and just moments later a rather humorous thing happened as Giovinco hit the post twice in the span of maybe 5 seconds. He was visibly dumbfounded by this and it put a smile on Altidore's face.
Both the game's and Altidore's goallessness ended in the 87th minute, as he launched the ball between Michael Parkhurst legs and into the net. Like Giovinco last week, the weight seemed lifted off Altidore's shoulders.
Man of the Match
Sebastian Giovinco
Seba's officially back! Last week wasn't just a one-off. He was key to everything Toronto did offensively in this match and looked like the league MVP doing it.
