After a much-needed break following their upsetting loss to Montreal, Toronto FC took on the Chicago Fire with the hopes of reclaiming first in the east. Despite seeming sluggish at times and being outplayed for most of the game, Toronto managed to leave the Windy City with 3 points.
The Opening 45
Chicago seemed more likely to get the opening goal. Their chances were better and they seemed to have more energy. Toronto's first real chance saw Jozy Altidore sent the ball just inches too far away for Jonathan Osorio. But the two would recover.
About 5 minutes later, Justin Morrow sent the ball to Altidore who was able to get his 6th goal of the season. Toronto would maintain the lead until the whistle.
The Second Half
Toronto went up 2-0 early in the half, thanks to a somewhat comical goal that started with Altidore easily stopping Sean Johnson's attempt to clean the ball after a save, during which Johnson slipped during, and Osorio launching the ball into the net. Chicago would get on the board minutes later thanks to a header by Michael de Leeuw following a strong rush created by the freshly subbed in David Accam.
For the remainder of the half, Chicago seemed focused on getting the tying goal and one would not have been shocked had they managed. But thanks to wonderful clearances, Toronto was able to preserve their lead and win it.
Man of the Match
Jozy Altidore
Toronto's MVP as of late had a stellar game with a goal and an assist. Many were concerned Toronto would struggle for goals without Giovinco but Altidore is a more than fitting replacement.
