"Dominating" is the only word that can be used to describe Toronto FC's victory over rivals New York City FC. Between Giovinco's MVP snub to the lack of suspension of David Villa for his kick out at Armando Cooper, Toronto had a chip on its shoulder and came out to prove a point.
Chris Cummins this one's for you!
The Opening 45
Toronto came at NYC hard right from the start and did damage right away, as Giovinco scored in the 6th minute (meaning NYC was in need of 4 goals to win the series).
Despite having a massive edge and arguably already having delivered a curb stomp, Toronto didn't let up. After being tripped, Giovinco scored a penalty in the 20th minute, totally killing the New York crowd, and Jozy Altidore added a third goal 10 minutes later, starting the walkouts.
The series was seemingly over at the half.
The Second Half
Rather than take the second half easy, Toronto continued to slaughter NYC with Jonothan Osorio scoring in the 50th minute.
NYC seemed totally defeated. Despite dominating possession, they had no real chances for the whole game. This was the first time Toronto had faced all three of their DPs at once and it seemed as if Toronto had the trio figured out fast. For a team that seemed to have Toronto's number for most of the last two years, NYC got pwned.
Adding to NYC's sorrows at home on this night, Giovinco added goal number 3 in extra time.
The whistle blew and both New York teams were done and all that was left in the east were Toronto FC and the Montreal Impact. Hope you're ready for the first meeting of the two cities in the playoffs (excluding CFL) since 1979.
Man of the Match
Sebastian Giovinco
Not only did the man have a hat trick, he also had an assist on Osorio's goal. Dear MLS, the fact this man isn't up for MVP is a joke and you know it.
