Vancouver came into Toronto on a two game winning streak but was also battered, tired and shorthanded towards the end. On paper, Toronto should have won but a series of shocking errors (by Toronto's recently strong D) and some strong keeping by David Ousted, Vancouver walked away from the wild high scoring game with 3 points.
After some early errors, resulting in two Vancouver goals, Toronto fought back and tied it only to allow another pair of quick goals as the result of careless play that put the game just out of reach. Adding insult to injury were a pair of tragic injuries to key Toronto players.
Finger pointing with numbers.
The Opening 45
Vancouver capitalized on Toronto's lapse in defence twice early. In the 12th minute Kekuta Manneh took advantage of an error on a pass from Damien Perquis to Jonathan Orosio to score his first goal of the game. Moments later, the red-hot Christian Bolaños netted his 4th goal in 4 games after picking up the rebound from another Manneh shot.
Despite being behind and defensively lacking, Toronto controlled much of the half and had a great number of chances, and finally found the back of the net with a record-setting goal by Sebastian Giovinco late in the first half that put Toronto within reach. But Toronto's offence in the first half suffered a possibly great loss.
In the 34th minute, a foul on Jozy Altidore resulted in a penalty kick for Altidore, who is still in search of goal #1 this season. The kick was not only saved but appears to have injured Altidore's hamstring. He left the game before the end of the half.
The Second Half
Toronto fought hard for a tying goal in the early part of the half and Giovinco scored it. For a while, it appeared that Toronto might have been able to pull off the win. But again, a pair of Toronto errors led to multiple goals for Vancouver from Manneh and Pedro Morales not long after Giovinco's.
Following the goals, Toronto regained control and even earned a man advantage when Fraser Aird was given a red card following fouls on Giovinco and Osorio. Unfortunately, the foul on Osorio resulted in him leaving the match for medical reasons. Toronto was able to take advantage of Aird's departure with a goal from Drew Moor, off of one of Toronto's many corners, but Toronto was unable to catch up and Vancouver won the day.
Man of the Match
Sebastian Giovinco
Giovinco continues to look like an offensive superman for Toronto having 2 goals and an assist in this game. He also broke Dwayne De Rosario's MLS goal record for Toronto. With his current form some, including Toronto coach Greg Vanney, are expecting a call-up from Italy for the European Championship to be on its way.
Kekuta Manneh
Manneh's breakdown of Toronto ultimately led to 3 goals including 2 of his own. We haven't really seen anyone so far this year find the flaws in Toronto's defense with such great success.
