VANCOUVER, B.C - Kendall Waston is off to his first MLS All-Star game and the Vancouver Whitecaps centre-back couldn't be more excited. It's a long overdue achievement for Waston, who is highly regarded as one of the top defenders in Major League Soccer. The MLS All-Stars will take on Arsenal on Thursday, July 28 at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California. Waston was surprised by his selection.
"I feel blessed, I feel blessed most of all," said Waston. "To be honest, I didn't expect it, but god gave me that gift so I've just received it."
The 28 year-old Waston was an interesting pick to the All-Star team because of his poor disciplinary record this season. In 16 matches this season, Waston has earned himself 6 yellow cards, and 2 red cards. He has been suspended three times and has lost his cool on various occasions.
Will Waston try to avoid picking up a red card against a team of Arsenal's pedigree?
"Red card.... nah," said a surprised Waston. "That is a game to enjoy."
If Waston isn't expecting to earn a booking, perhaps he will go out of his way to change his style off play. The 'Towering Tico' is dominant in the air and a force inside his own box. He has scored a pair of headed goals in MLS play this season and also smashed in a header vs Crystal Palace on July 19 at BC Place.
Kendall Waston can only play one style of football and that's why he's become a top defender at both ends of the pitch. Assuming that should change the way he plays could be detrimental to his strengths. Waston doesn't see himself shying away from challenges or turning away against Arsenal or any other team.
"No, No, No, said a confident Waston. "If I play against my Momma, and I have to tackle her, I would tackle her."
Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey is not on the traveling roster for Arsène Wenger squad, but he did have some high praise for Waston last year as he campaigned for his inclusion in the 2015 MLS All-Star game.
Playing against the likes of Crystal Palace and Arsenal in the span of ten days could possibly open up Waston's talents to European and English scouts not familiar with him. Opportunities to play against top teams from across the pond don't come around every day. Waston isn't thinking about possibilities down the road. He prefers to live in the now and will be looking to do his best come Thursday in San Jose.
"Well... you never know. You just have to be a professional and try to do your best always."
Waston isn't sure where he will fit into the match vs Arsenal or in what specific formation he'll play. It's all an experience he is planning to take in and enjoy. The Whitecaps will return from the MLS All-Star break with an away fixture against FC Dallas on Sunday, July 31 and Waston says he will be ready to go.
