Ottawa Fury drew the New York Cosmos 0-0 on Wednesday evening in a hard fought match between the NASL’s top clubs. For a scoreless draw the match was fairly entertaining as both clubs created decent chances, with Fury controlled much of the second half. Although Fury will have hoped for all three points, a draw still keeps them in the race for the combined standings and atop the Fall Season table.
The back four remained unchanged as expected, while Haworth replacing Ubiparipovic was the only change from the midfield that faced Minnesota United more than a week earlier. Julian De Guzman remained sidelined with a leg injury, with Mauro Eustaquio earning another start alongside captain Richie Ryan.
Tom Heinemann started as the lone striker, with Oliver and Paulo Jr joining the attack on the wings. Andrew Wiedeman, who scored three goals in the previous two matches, was unavailable through injury, meaning Ugur Albayrak would find his first Fury appearance as a second half sub.
The Opening 45
The match stated off fairly physical with Fury setting the tone. Heinemann was quick to foul Raul with a push to the back, while Haworth use his body to win the ball sending an opponent rolling in the turf. Both teams shared possession and worked the ball around, however neither team took control of the match in the first half.
Raul had one of the better opportunities of the half as Lucky Mkosana played in a nice pass for Raul, who took a shot from 25 yards out. Peiser was able to dive in time to push the shot past the post. Restrepo would later receive a Raul pass and blast a shot on net, however Peiser was able to make the save, keeping the match tied 0-0 heading into the half.
The Second Half
Fury would control much of the second half and created most of the scoring opportunities, while their defense was able to shut down the likes of Raul, Mkosana and Restrepo. Heinemann and Paulo Jr linked up well to create a chance while Haworth would have a shot go just wide, but there was nothing that could beat Jimmy Maurer.
Ugur Albayrak would make his Fury debut wearing number seventy seven, replacing Brazilian Oliver. Fury would continue to push for a goal with Albayrak nearly getting a shot away from close range, however the match would finish scoreless, with each team walking away with a point.
Fury will be disappointed to not earn a win on the day however they had a great performance, particularly in the second half, and will carry that confidence into the weekend as they host the struggling Tampa Bay Rowdies.
Man Of The Match
Colin Falvey
Colin Falvey did a great job of shutting down the Cosmos attack and make important tackles. His partnership with Alves is one of the best in the league and they worked well together to keep the Spring Season champions scoreless.
