According to recent rumours, Toronto FC’s first ever Designated Player Julian de Guzman has been traded to Major League Soccer side FC Dallas.
The ex-Deportivo La Coruña midfielder and Canadian National Team regular has seen his time cut short with Toronto FC under new head coach Paul Mariner, who has opted for the likes of Eric Avila and Terry Dunfield instead of Toronto's first ever Designated Player.
Seeing limited playing time, Toronto FC have likely been looking to offload De Guzman’s contract in order to shore up their backline. Sources close to the situation have revealed to RedNation Online that Toronto FC may be close to signing Canadian Men’s National Team captain Kevin McKenna.
With Julian de Guzman’s hefty contract removed from Toronto FC’s salary cap, the Reds have room to sign a commanding centerback. Kevin McKenna is, reportedly, their first option.
McKenna comes with a plethora of experience under his belt both for the national team as well as in Europe, with 1. FC Köln in Germany.
Should Toronto FC sign Kevin McKenna, they add a leader in the backline, and a local Canadian talent as well.
Details on Julian de Guzman’s trade have not been released as of yet. Reports say the deal will be made official tomorrow afternoon. It is currently unknown what Toronto FC have gotten in exchange, and how much of de Guzman’s salary the club will have to pay.
Update: This morning, Toronto FC officially announced that Julian de Guzman has been traded to FC Dallas in exchange for 2010 2nd round draft pick Andrew Wiedeman, a forward with limited playing time for the Hoops.
Julian de Guzman will wear the number 12 shirt. It is still unclear whether Toronto FC or FC Dallas will be paying for de Guzman's salary.
