In this interview, Richard and RedNation discuss his first year on the job at the helm of the Whitecaps Residency Program, 17 year old Residency Graduate Bryce Alderson, what he looks for in terms of the players that he wants to bring into the Residency Program, Arsene Wenger’s recent contention that the next great players will come from Asia and the United States, the recent prevalence of Dutch coaches in Canada, and the importance of International competition for young developing players.

Richard Grootscholten, the Technical Director and Head Coach of the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency Program. Born in the Netherlands, Grootscholten arrived in Canada with 20 years of coaching experience in Dutch soccer. In his previous position, he served as technical director of Sparta Rotterdam - the oldest professional soccer club in the Netherlands - from 2008 to 2010. Between 2006 and 2008, he served as head coach of the Sparta youth academy and assistant coach of the club’s first team.
