While there is no doubt Andrew Wenger, who was selected with the first overall pick in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft by the Montreal Impact, is an excellent player and young prospect, he still comes to La Belle Province with some uncertainty surrounding him.

As the winner of the 2011 Hermann Trophy, which is presented to presented to the best male player in NCAA Division I soccer, Wenger is a strong two way player who has received a multitude of plaudits during his college soccer career. He was selected as the 2011 ACC Offensive Player of the Year and was named the ACC Rookie of the Year and ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2009 and 2010 respectively. So while there was a consensus among North American soccer pundits that he was going to be selected either first or second in the draft, pundits are split as to where Wenger’s long term future lies at the professional level.

Given the fact that he has anchored Duke’s back line as a centre back for two years and then moved to forward in 2011, where he lead the Atlantic Coast Conference with 17 goals, it remains to be seen where on the pitch Montreal will employ the talented and versatile Generation Adidas player.

Wenger met with the media via conference call early in the afternoon today and indicated that one of his goals for 2012 will be to pin down a consistent role on the pitch with the Impact.

"I think at this point I am a jack of all trades. Hopefully over the next couple of months the coaching staff will be able to find a place for me to play permanently or at least for an extended period of time," said Wenger.

When asked if he would prefer to play as a defender, midfielder or forward at the professional level, the six foot tall native of Lancaster, Pennsylvania provided a measured and oft stated response.

"I have always enjoyed playing in the midfield, but wherever I can play to help the team win, I'll be happy."

Rather than emphasizing the particular position that he wants to play professionally, Wenger was quick to state that the most important aspect for him at this point in his career was to land with an organization that will allow him to maximize his potential as a young player.

“The most important thing for me was to be picked by a fantastic organization that will help me grow as a player and that will give all the opportunities and resources necessary to succeed. And I think Montreal will do a fantastic job. I'm going to be able to play in a fantastic athletic environment with a great setup. I'm very excited."

While most college players do not make a huge impact in their first season in the MLS, Wenger indicated that he is hoping to buck that trend.

“Obviously, I have never played in the MLS before. As much as I'm sure I have an idea, I'm sure it will change very quickly. I hope to make a difference on the field.”

Asked how much he expected to play during his first season with Montreal, the 21 year old indicated that the answer to that question will likely lie in where Head Coach Jesse Marsch decides to deploy him on the pitch.

“I think it will depend on what position I am playing, but obviously, as a player, your expectation is to play in every game and that is the goal, along with helping the team to win.”

Regardless of where he ends up on the pitch, Wenger’s first day in Montreal will be delayed by the fact that he is currently training with the United States U-23 National Team.

“Tonight I will immediately fly back to Los Angeles to continue with U.S. U-23 National Team camp, which runs for the next week.”
