“On the second day of Christmas, Bell + Rogers gave to me…”
Depth In All Positions
With a new roof firmly in place (I hope), our Christmas countdown continues. Toronto FC’s need for depth in all positions is the second wish of the holiday (off)season!
Yes, that means two of every player, for every position, on the field. I’m talking about tangible, usable, respectable depth, a mix of youth, experience, MLS quality and foreign talent capable of working in a 4-3-3. At minimum, that means Toronto FC requires four fullbacks, four center-halves, six midfielders (both offensive and defensive in nature), four wingers and two center-forwards. Phew! That’s quite a list of players.
Luckily, Aron Winter took care of the majority of that list last-season, but now its time to plug the gaps and make sure Toronto FC has every position covered. 2012 could be a very long year for Toronto, if a spot in the Champions League is maintained, so injuries, fatigue and player selection issues require Toronto have adequate depth.
MLS rules allow for 30 players on a roster – Toronto FC should aim for at least 28. Between academy signings, player acquisitions and draft picks, this is not a hard number to reach. However, the number of spots available is not quite as important as the quality of the players occupying them.
Depth is easy to achieve in this league, especially for Toronto FC; quality depth, on the other hand, is not. It’s for this reason that, on the second day of Christmas, quality depth is on the wishlist.
Depth in all positions, and two players in every spot, is the second wish of the season. Make it happen!
