It wasn’t quite the weekend like we’ve seen for the past two, but there was still some noteworthy performances, as well a goals, to keep Canadian National Team supporters intrigued as the October 16 friendly with Australia approaches. While there have been some players of note, what likely is a greater concern is a handful of injuries as well as some Canucks on the bubble of their respective domestic teams not getting the minutes one would hope for.
In England
As has been the case for the last two seasons, Marcus Haber has emerged as an improving option up top as a target forward and continues to cause trouble in and around the 18-yard box. Moving from Stevenage last year to Notts County, his new side has struggled in the opening 10 games of the season. However, they have won two of their last three and Haber has scored in both of those games. On the weekend, he came on as a late sub and added the fourth goal to secure their second win of the year in a 4-0 route of Crewe Alexandra.
In Germany
Injuries have caused to Canadians of note to miss out on important playing time as two defenders in the 2.Bundesliga have seen limited minutes so far this season. Both Kevin McKenna (FC Koln) and Andre Hainault (Aalen) have not yet had the seasons they would have hoped, and add in Marcel De Jong and Simeon Jackson who are competing in the Bundesliga but also seeing limited time, there is little to get excited about in the country.
However, two veteran strikers who are on the bubble of being part of the national team moving forward, Rob Friend and Olivier Occean, continue to settle into their respective clubs in the 2.Bundesliga. Friend only saw one half of play in 1860 Munich’s 0-0 draw with Energie Cottbus, but Occean was once again on the scoresheet as he netted the first goal, and winner, as Kaiserslautern defeated Arminia Bielefeld 3-0.
Marcus Haber subs in late, but gets a head onto the ball for the fourth goal in a 4-0 route of Crewe Alexandra.
Olivier Occean nets the opener, and eventual game winner, as Kaiserslautern win 3-0..
Tosaint Rickett's Bucaspor continues to do well in Turkey's second division and won in the last seconds via spectacular kick.
