The holiday season is upon us and with that comes inclement weather that signals winter breaks in the likes of Germany, the Netherlands, Slovenia and even Turkey, while England plows ahead but often has matches postponed. This was the case over the weekend as there was only a few games of significance for Canadians abroad as a few saw their games unable to be played in England (Iain Hume and Marcus Haber) while the rest fit in their last fixtures before a break that will see them through until late January.
In Netherlands
One of the handful of Canadians that is at the top level, week in week out, Atiba Hutchinson again had a full ninety minutes as PSV maintained their position atop the Eredivisie after this weekend’s match. In a dead heat with the likes of Twente, Ajay and Feyenoord, PSV throttled NAC 6-1 on Saturday to remain a game ahead of Ajay and Feyenoord and tied with Twente for top spot. But an absurd goal difference of +42 and on 60 goals total on the season, PSV head into the winter break at top spot.
It has been noted several times through the fall that this has been a familiar position for PSV over the last two seasons, however, the difference this year is that they will not competing in any European competitions in the new year and can focus solely on the domestic title, one that has slipped through their fingers every year Hutchinson has been at the Eindoven club.
The second division now has a Canadian to keep an eye on as Jordan Santiago once again had a successful display in a 2-1 victory as Veendam defeated Sparta Rotterdam 2-1. Santiago has had a successful, although brief, stint with Veendam over the last month and looks to be on a short contract that will end on December 31. Santiago had spent the last several years at Cardiff and it will be interesting to see where the former U20 keeper will end up 2013.
Milan Borjan is once again let down by poor defending but in the end Sivasspor are able to secure the win 3-1:
