The excitement of the final weeks in the European winter season continues as Canadians overseas had a good weekend getting involved with their respective clubs over the last few days. It’s been a crazy season with lots of ups and downs, especially following the exit from World Cup Qualifying, but six months later, several players have reemerged in good situations with their domestic sides.
In Germany
It’s the same story in the German top flight as the two Canadians in the league went head to head. Olivier Occean did not make an appearance, but Marcel De Jong had a late sub into the game as Augsburg downed Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0. With the win, they are within reach of Fortuna Dusseldorf to escape the relegation playoff game, that as it stands right now, could very well be against Kevin McKenna’s FC Koln.
After slipping up last weekend against Kaiserslautern, Koln got back in the win column after they downed Aalen 1-0. McKenna continues to be an integral part of the starting line-up, going 90 minutes. With the win they remain neck and neck with Kaiserslautern who is a point behind, but will be playing on Monday. Added to McKenna, Rob Friend’s career remains on track with 1860 Munich as he netted another goal, but they were ultimately unable to get back in the game as they fell 3-1 to St. Pauli.
In the Netherlands
Atiba Hutchinson’s PSV suffered a massive set back in their hopes to finish top of the Eredivisie as they lost 3-2 at home to Ajax. Hutchinson kept his position at right back for the full match, but the Eindoven club simply could not hold off Ajax who are now six points ahead of them and created a five point gap between them and second placed Vitesse. PSV are now tied for third with Feyenoord.
In Turkey
Milan Borjan once again started between the posts for Sivasspor as they hosted Genclerbirligi, holding them to a 1-1 draw. Sivasspor looked like they weren’t going to break through but an own goal salvaged a point and they look to be in a good position clear of relegation.
This week marks a huge match for the Sivas club as the semi-finals of the Turkish Cup begins with Sivasspor hosting Trabszonspor. A win in this round will put them into the finals and give them a very good chance at gaining entry into the Europa League.
Hadar Al-Shabani gets a rare start for Nimes and does well through the game, but can't fend off Dijon in a 1-1 draw.
Milan Borjan's Sivasspor net an own goal to earn a critical point in a 1-1 draw and look ahead to their Turkish Cup match mid-week against Trabzonspor
