Footy Round-Up: Canadian MLS week in review
The Montreal Impact continued to stay hot, picking up their second MLS victory in successive weeks over FC Dallas 2-0 at Stade Saputo. Ignacio Piatti and Jack McInerney both scored their second goals of the season for the Impact (2-3-2), who pulled one point clear of expansion side New York City FC for 8th place. Montreal will look to carry their momentum into Chicago this weekend when they take on the Fire at Toyota Park.
Toronto FC picked up a solid 1-0 victory over the visiting Portland Timbers, with Sebastien Giovinco scoring his fifth of the season for the Reds. Giovinco and injured striker Jozy Altidore have been a revelation for Toronto (4-5-1), as the two designated players have combined to score 10 of the club’s 14 goals in MLS play this season. Next up for TFC is a friendly at BMO Field against Manchester City on Wednesday before heading out on the road to play the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday.
The Vancouver Whitecaps defeated Edmonton FC at Clarke Field 2-1 (3-2) to book their place in the Amway Canadian Championship final. Pedro Morales opened the scoring for the visitors early in the first half from the penalty spot before Edmonton’s Tomi Ameobi matched him from that same spot late in the second half to seemingly secure the home side’s advancement. However, second-half substitute Matias Laba spoiled the party for Edmonton fans when he scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to book Vancouver’s championship berth against the Montreal Impact. In MLS play, the Whitecaps fell 1-0 to the Colorado Rapids, who nabbed their first win at home this season and first at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park since July 25, 2014. Vancouver (6-5-2) hosts Real Salt Lake this weekend at BC Place.
Stud – Chris Wondolowski, San Jose Earthquakes
The San Jose striker became just the ninth player in MLS history to score 100 goals when he converted from the penalty spot in the 68th minute against Orlando City FC. Wondolowski’s goal salvaged a 1-1 draw for the home side, who are now unbeaten in their last five matches.
Dud – New York Red Bulls
New York suffered a disappointing 2-0 home defeat to the visiting Philadelphia Union. Philadelphia’s victory was the first in franchise history after being winless in seven previous attempts at Red Bull Arena.
