Footy Round-Up: Canadian MLS week in review
After losing at home to New York City FC last week, Toronto FC rebounded with a fantastic 3-1 victory over the Montreal Impact and a solid nil-nil draw with D.C. Untied at BMO Field. Toronto (7-6-2) put together perhaps their best performance of the season against Montreal, with Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco scoring the goals. All three designated players were dominant throughout the contest, creating many offensive chances. The Reds outplayed D.C. United for large stretches in the following match on a rain-soaked field, but could not find the decisive goal. Still, Toronto will likely feel satisfied with a draw against the top team in the Eastern Conference. TFC face the Los Angeles Galaxy at Stub Hub Center on Saturday.
Montreal followed up Wednesday’s defeat against Toronto with a 2-2 away draw against the Philadelphia Union. Ignacio Piatti and Jack McInerney scored the goals for Montreal (5-6-3) against the Union, while Ambroise Oyongo registered the Impact’s lone marker against Toronto. Montreal returns home this weekend to take on New York City FC at Stade Saputo.
The Vancouver Whitecaps knocked off the New England Revolution 2-1 to remain at the top of the Western Conference table. Cristian Techera and Octavio Rivero scored the goals for the Whitecaps (10-6-2), who have won three straight road games. Vancouver’s five-game road trip wraps up this weekend against the Colorado Rapids.
Stud – Toronto FC
Toronto had a strong week, picking up a convincing win over Canadian rivals Montreal and a draw against the Eastern Conference’s top seeded D.C. United. TFC currently sit in third position in the Eastern Conference as they continue to push for their first playoff berth in franchise history.
Dud – Seattle Sounders FC
Seattle is once again my dud this week, as they lost two more matches on the road against the Philadelphia Union and Portland Timbers (1-0 and 4-1 respectively).
The Sounders have now dropped to second place in the Western Conference, three points adrift of first place Vancouver. Next up for Seattle is a home date against D.C. United, the Eastern Conference’s 1st place team, on Friday.
