Footy Round-Up: Canadian MLS week in review
Toronto FC returned to action, recording a disappointing 2-0 home defeat to New York City FC. David Villa scored both goals for the visitors, who recorded their third straight MLS victory. Toronto (6-6-1) will look to rebound with a pair of home games this week, against the Montreal Impact on Wednesday and DC United on Saturday.
The Vancouver Whitecaps registered a solid 2-1 away win over the New York Red Bulls. Kekuta Manneh and Kianz Froese scored the goals for Vancouver (9-6-2), but the star of the show was Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted. The Dane stopped two Bradley Wright-Phillips penalty kicks to preserve maximum points for the visitors. Vancouver takes on the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium this weekend.
After losing to New York City FC last week, the Montreal Impact responded with a confident 2-0 victory over Orlando City FC at Stade Saputo. Donny Toia and Dominic Oduro scored for Montreal (5-5-2), who is now just two points behind TFC for 4th place in the Eastern Conference. Following their contest with Toronto, the Impact travel to Philadelphia to take on the Union on Saturday night.
Stud – Los Angeles Galaxy
The Galaxy bounced back in convincing fashion this week, thrashing the visiting Philadelphia Union 5-1. Los Angeles, who were winless in their previous three MLS matches, host the Portland Timbers on Wednesday before visiting the San Jose Earthquakes this weekend. Honourable mention goes to Vancouver’s keeper David Ousted, who was brilliant against the Red Bulls and stopped two penalties.
Dud – Seattle Sounders FC
Seattle lost at home 2-0 against the San Jose Earthquakes this week, their second home defeat to San Jose this season. Since 2012, the Sounders are now a meager 2-8-1 against the Earthquakes. Seattle, who is tied at the top of the Western Conference table with Vancouver, visits the Philadelphia Union and Portland Timbers this week.
