Footy Round-Up: Canadian MLS week in review
Toronto FC played perhaps one of their most impressive matches of the season in a 3-1 home defeat of the San Jose Earthquakes. On a stormy night that saw kick-off delayed by 23 minutes, Toronto (5-5-1) started the game on a soggy pitch the more livelier and threatening side. San Jose tried valiantly to get things going in the second half, but goals from Justin Morrow, Warren Creavalle and Luke Moore proved too much to overcome. The Reds, who are unbeaten in their last three MLS contets, take on D.C. United at RFK Stadium on Saturday.
The Vancouver Whitecaps returned to their winning ways with a 2-1 victory over visiting Real Salt Lake at BC Place. Gershon Koffie and Cristian Techera’s first goals of the season led the Whitecaps (7-5-2), who remain in second place in the Western Conference. Vancouver travels to Montreal for a Canadian derby against the Impact on Wednesday before visiting the LA Galaxy this weekend.
After winning their last two matches, reality crashed down hard on the Montreal Impact in a 3-0 defeat to the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park. Montreal (2-4-2) must now turn their attention to visiting Canadian rivals Vancouver, as well as the Columbus Crew, who they face on the road on Saturdayh
Stud – Portland Timbers
The Timbers won both games they played this week, 1-0 at home over D.C. United and 2-1 in Colorado over the Rapids. With the victories, Portland vaulted themselves into a playoff position over the San Jose Earthquakes. The Timbers play host to the New England Revolution this weekend.
Dud – FC Dallas
After losing to the Montreal Impact last week, FC Dallas lost again, this time in dominating fashion 4-0 to Sporting KC. FC Dallas are tied on points with KC for third position in the Western Conference table and now travel to San Jose to take on the Earthquakes at Avaya Stadium.
