Ottawa Fury FC defeated Indy Eleven 1-0 on Saturday afternoon to earn an important win and boost themselves off the bottom of the NASL table. Paterson’s second goal of the season was enough to ensure Fury won all three points on the day, while the defense once again looked strong and composed as they earned a second consecutive clean sheet.
Heading into the match Fury were without the services of injured Wiedeman and Oliver, while Heinemann started the match on the bench following an injury from the Rowdies. Carl Haworth started up front in the centre forward position with Paulo Jr and Poltronieri played down the wings. Drew Beckie once again started in the midfield alongside De Guzman and Ubiparipovic, while captain Richie Ryan returned from injury to start on the bench. Richter, Alves, Falvey and Trafford formed that back four, while keeper Peiser wore the armband.
The Opening Half
Eleven started the match on the offensive, testing Peiser with a shot just over the bar inside the first minute. Ottawa started to control possession as Indy Eleven was looking to use their speed on the counter attack to create chances. There were several half chances early on for both clubs but neither was able to take advantage of the chances created.
Ottawa had a couple shouts for penalties in the first half, including both Ubiparipovic and Beckie being brought down inside the box, but officials didn’t see much in the challenges and let play continue. Despite heading into the half 0-0, Ottawa Fury would have been happy to have a strong defensive showing and several chances created.
The Second Half
Tom Heinemann came on at the beginning of the second half in place of Poltronieri, allowing Haworth to move out to the wing. Despite the change up front, Fury’s defensive line remained unchanged for the second half and put up another strong performance. In the 58th minute Alves made a clinical slide tackle in the box to stop a scoring chance, while Peiser kicked away a close range shot to deny Eleven a goal.
Nicki Paterson and Richie Ryan entered the game in the 61st and 80th respectively and both has positive impacts instantly. Paterson added the grit the midfielder was lacking while captain Richie Ryan took control of the game through the middle. With Ryan coming on for De Guzman, Fury fans are yet to see what the Canadian and Irishman can produce together.
In the 88th minute Ubiparipovic would work his way into the box, past a few defenders, and a deflected clearance by the Eleven defense sent the ball directly to the feet of Nicki Paterson who was waiting unmarked just inside the eighteen yard box. The Scotsman’s shots would curl part the outreaching fingers of Eleven keeper Nicht and rattled the back of the net to give the Canadian side a late 1-0 lead. Fury would hold on to the lead through six minutes of added time and earn a vital three points on the day, lifting them off the bottom of the table and back into the mix for a possible playoff position.
Dos Santos was very confident his squad could produce a win heading into the match, and a strong defensive showing helped make up for a mediocre offensive effort on the day. “We feel that we’ve been working so hard for this and it just feels good to get the win” the Fury gaffer had to say after the match. Following three consecutive 3-1 losses, Ottawa have been strong defensively, allowing just one goal in the last three matches, but are still missing the offensive effort that would help them put games away.
Fury will host FC Edmonton on Friday May 29th before finishing the NASL Spring Season with two matches on the road vs San Antonio and Jacksonville. Following FC Edmonton’s win on Sunday, Ottawa Fury sit 8th place and just five points behind 2nd place Minnesota United.
Man Of The Match
Nicki Paterson
Nicki Paterson was the only player on the pitch that was able to take advantage of a great scoring opportunity and give Fury the win. His injection with 30 minutes left helped boost Fury, and his curling shot past Nicht was perfectly placed.
Honorable Mentions
Ubiparipovic once again had a fantastic performance and did all the hard work to set up Paterson with the goal. His vision with the ball and ability to make pin point passes certainly gives Fury options in the attacking midfield. Richie Ryan, although he only played 10 minutes, also added a lot with his injection into the game, and he wasted no time taking control of the midfield.
