With just 39 days and some odd hours to go until Canada opens the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Edmonton, the list of 23 women who will make up Canada’s squad was announced today in Vancouver. Canada’s coach John Herdman selected three goalkeepers, eight defenders, seven midfielders, and five forwards, with few surprises.
The biggest news of the day surrounds Diana Matheson, who has been one of Canada’s best players since the London Olympics. TSN’s Gareth Wheeler reported that Matheson broke her foot last month while rehabbing the torn ACL in her knee she suffered last October in a friendly against Japan. TSN’s Jason DeVos confirmed the report, saying that Matheson broke a metatarsal. There was little doubt that Herdman would include Matheson on the roster, as there is still six weeks to get her ready for the tournament, but the news that she has broken her foot throws a wrench in her comeback. If Matheson cannot recover from both injuries in time, Herdman can select a replacement for her from a list of six alternate players.
Canada 2015 will be the first senior World Cup experience for eight Canadian players, including Kadeisha Buchanan, Allysha Chapman, Selenia Iacchelli, Lauren Sesselmann, Jessie Fleming, Ashley Lawrence, Josée Bélanger and Adriana Leon.
After the London Olympics, Herdman stressed the importance of bringing in young players to his aging squad. He has delivered on that front, including 17-year-old Fleming, 19-year-olds Buchanan and Lawrence, and 22-year-old Leon on his roster.
Notable omissions from the squad include a few youngsters who played significant minutes in the last few years, in Sura Yekka and Rebecca Quinn. Janine Beckie, who was in camp with Canada after a good showing at last year’s under 20 World Cup in Canada also did not make the cut. In addition, Rachel Quon and Nkem Ezurike, two players who are currently allocated in the NWSL, did not make the squad.
The list of 23 is below, along their age as of June 6th, the start of the World Cup, and a brief, not at all exhaustive, list of career highlights for each player.
