Ottawa Fury defeated the Carolina RailHawks 2-1 on Sunday afternoon, a result that sends the Canadian club to the top of the North American Soccer League standings and stretch their run to ten matches unbeaten. Carl Haworth managed to score a last gasp winner in a thrilling match that saw the club record their fourth straight win in at row at Lansdowne Park.
Richie Ryan once against started in the midfield alongside Mauro Eustaquio and Carl Haworth, while Aly Hassan was given his first Fury start up front alongside Andrew Wiedeman and Paulo Jr who played on the wings. The back four remained unchanged as they have done so since May.
Both Fury and Railhawks had a chance to go top of the NASL standings with a win on Sunday as both teams have been in great form so far this year. It was Fury’s third match in eight days and with the incredible heat the club would need to rely on their depth to grind out results.
The Opening 45
Fury came out strong in the first half, controlling much of the play and creating many of the earlier chances. They were able to close down Carolina when the Railhawks held possession and limited the away clubs chances early on
Aly Hassan took only twenty minutes to score his first Fury goal in his first Fury start as he got his head on a wonderful cross by Paulo Jr and past the fingertips of diving Railhawks keeper Fitzgerald. For the fourth straight home match Ottawa Fury were able to score first and put the opponent on the back foot.
Railhawks would create little in chances and were often sloppy through the first half, allowing Fury to control the play for good portions and work the ball around. The match would go into half time with Fury leading 1-0 and just 45 minutes away from sitting atop the NASL Fall and Combined standings.
The Second Half
Fury came out in the second half once again controlling the match and making the Railhawks chase the ball. In the 56th minute Carolina went down a man as Thompson picked up two yellows for two consecutive fouls in the same play.
Fury looked as though they would comfortably hold onto the lead as they headed into the final ten minutes still leading 1-0 and up a man, however Nacho Novo was able to latch onto a through ball and poke a shot past Peiser to bring the Railhawks level with nine minutes remaining.
De Guzman entered the match, pushing Haworth out to the wing, while Heinemann came on to replace an exhausted Aly Hassan. The changes, along with the loss of their 1-0 seemed to spur on Ottawa as they created chance after chance in an onslaught of attack. Heinemann, Alves, Ryan and Haworth all had glorious chances to score, but as the match went deep into the six minutes of added time it looked as though Fury may have to settle for a draw.
In the last breaths of the match, Richie Ryan played the all out to Ryan Richter on the wing, who took a few steps towards the net before delivering a beautiful cross that Carl Haworth would put into the back of the net, giving Fury a last minute 2-1 win.
The result puts Fury atop the NASL standings for the first time ever, but also represented a big turning point for the team as they were able to rescue points in a match where last season they would have surrendered them. They now face two matches on the road, including a tie with Canadian rivals FC Edmonton. Post game Dos Santos simply said he coaches a bunch of warriors, showing the pride he takes in his teams work ethic and determination.
Man Of The Match
Carl Haworth
With a fantastic match and a last minute goal, Haworth earns Man Of The Match honors with his second goal this week.
Honorable Mentions
The entire squad deserves mentions for this win, for grinding out a massive result when it mattered most. Every player put in a strong effort on a hot day and proved that they are strong challengers in the NASL this year.
