Ottawa Fury drew the Atlanta Silverbacks 1-1 on Saturday evening, with Nicki Paterson scoring the loan goal for Ottawa. It was a match that Ottawa should have won as Atlanta didn’t seem to be at their best, however a poor refereeing decision again led to a goal against for Ottawa and cost Fury two points.
Ottawa had some changes to their starting eleven with injuries and suspensions keeping many key players out. Peiser started in net with Randolph, Falvey, Alves and Richter forming the back four, while Paterson returned to the line up alongside Patryk Misik in the midfield. Brazilian Oliver, who was attacked on the flight from Toronto to Atlanta, started in the attacking midfield position, while Haworth, Heinemann and Poltronieri formed the forward line.
The Opening 45
Ottawa seemed to control much of the play early on and created several chances, but nothing that looked too dangerous. Atlanta came into the match more in the 20th minute and started to press the Fury defense, however the back four kept a strong line.
The in the 34th minute Fury won a free kick after Poltronieri was taken down just outside the corner of the box, setting Paterson up just 20 yards from the net. The Scotsman delivery went untouched as it dipped into the box and bounced in the six yard box before finding the back of the net, leaving Silverbacks keeper Cochran bewildered.
The Second Half
Fury started the half strong, keeping position and working the ball into the Silverbacks side of the park. Pesier came up with several key saves while Nicki Paterson was able to clear the ball off the line to keep Fury in the lead.
In the 57th minute Canadian Kyle Porter scored for Atlanta from the edge of the 6 yard box, although it appears he received the pass from an offside position. For the second week in a row it seems that officiating has played a big part in the final score of the Fury match.
Fury will once again feel hard done by as they put in a strong enough effort to earn the win over a sub-par Atlanta squad, however Dos Santos has said they will build on the point earned heading into their home opener April 18th vs Minnesota United.
Man Of The Match
Romuald Peiser
Pesier had a fantastic game and came but big several times for Ottawa. His skill and reflexes certainly helped Fury earn a point on the day, and his confidence and composure at the back is important for the Fury squad.
Honorable Mentions
Nicki Paterson had a great game, scoring a goal and clearing a chance off the line and fitting in well in the holding midfield position.
