Ottawa Fury were finally able to put their scoring troubles behind them as they put four goals past Indy Eleven keeper Nicht and earned a vital three points at home. In their first of three matches this week, Fury were able push themselves into just a point of first place in the Fall Season standings, with a game in hand, and tied for fourth in the combined standings. The club are also on a red hot eight game unbeaten streak as they continue collecting points and making up for early slips in the Spring Season.
Julian De Guzman returned to the Fury line up following his midweek match for Canada in the Gold Cup, giving Fury a boost through the midfield. De Guzman joined Richie Ryan and Sinisa Ubiparipovic in the midfield, while the back four of Richter, Alves, Falvey and Trafford remained unchanged. Fury gaffer Marc Dos Santos opted to start Tom Heinemann up front, with Andrew Wiedeman on the right wing and Paulo Jr on the left. Despite breaking his nose last weekend in Minnesota, Brazilian Oliver was available off the bench.
The Opening 45
The match started off fairly calmly, with Fury pushing forward and holding Indy Eleven at bay. In the 12th minute Eleven’s Smart impeded a Fury free kick resulting in a yellow card a free kick for Ottawa in a favourable position. Ubiparipovic delivered a fantastic cross to the back of the six yard box where Rafael Alves was able to wander in unmarked and head home Fury’s go ahead goal. For the second home match in a row Ottawa were able to get on the scoreboard in the first quarter of an hour and put the visiting team on the back foot
Indy Eleven would find an equalizer in the 33rd minute as Don Smart was given space outside the eighteen yard box and was able to slot a shot past a diving Peiser. It took all of two minutes for Fury to earn a free kick just outside the box down the other end of the pitch in a fantastic scoring position. Fury captain Richie Ryan stepped over the ball, and as he did against Minnesota United last year, the Irishman slotted home a fantastically place free kick with his left foot to restore Ottawa’s lead. Despite being ahead 2-1 heading into the half, Fury didn’t have a great first half and were lucky to be ahead from two set pieces.
The Second Half
Ottawa Fury were clearly aware of their subpar performance in the first half and came out in the second looking to control possession, take plenty of shots and put the game away. In the 56th minute Paulo Jr played the ball back to Rafael Alves deep in the Fury half, where the he would launch the ball up pitch for a running Heinemann who latched onto the ball at the edge of the Indy eighteen yard box and slot the ball past Indy keeper Nicht to give Fury a 3-1 lead.
After going up 3-1 Fury continued to push forward and refused to just sit back. Tom Heinemann pushed himself along the edge of the eighteen yard box where he was fouled, giving Ottawa a second free kick in prime scoring position. Once again Richie Ryan would step over the ball and curl home a perfectly placed free kick, his second of the match, to give Fury a 4-1 lead with just over twenty minutes left.
Despite Indy having Miller sent off for two yellow cards, they were able to earn a penalty kick in the 90th minute after Oliver appeared to foul Brown inside the box. Pineda would step up to take the penalty kick however his predictably place kick was easily saved by Peiser. Eleven would however score moments later, resulting in a final score of 4-2.
Fury will be thrilled with three points at home, especially against a hot team like Indy Eleven. After scoring just five goals in ten Spring Season matches, Fury were able to score four in one match, and seven in their first three matches of the Fall Season to officially end any talks of scoring troubles. It seems like Dos Santos is finally starting to see his squad play the type of football with the right mentality that he has preached, and if they continue their spectacular eight game unbeaten streak they will certainly be favourites for a post season berth later this year.
Fury will host Atlanta Silverbacks on Wednesday evening, which is their game in hand, before they host Carolina RailHawks on the 26th in their final of three home matches in eight days. Fury’s depth and fitness will certainly be put the test this week, however they will be thrilled with recent performances and will carry a lot of confidence into the week ahead.
Man Of The Match
Richie Ryan
Richie Ryan was able to score two fantastic free kicks to help earn Fury a win, while spending much of for match controlling play through the midfield.
Honorable Mention
Rafael Alves scored one goal and set up another in a fantastic game for the Brazilian. Alves is quickly becoming one of the most important signings Fury made in the off season.
