Ottawa Fury hosted the Tampa Bay Rowdies in front of more than 6000 people at Lansdowne Park on rainy Saturday evening. The two teams battled out to a 2-2 draw, with Rowdies bouncing back from a 2-0 deficit to earn a point with an 87th minute equalizer.
Ottawa were coming off a 0-0 draw with the Cosmos midweek, and fatigue appeared to be a variable in the team failing to give a top performance. Julian De Guzman and Ubiparipovic both returned from injury to earn themselves spots on the substitutes bench, while Ugur Albayrak was given his first Ottawa Fury start.
Heinemann started up front with Albayrak and Paulo Jr on the wings, while Mauro Eustaquio joined Carl Haworth and Richie Ryan in the midfield. The back four would remain unchanged with Trafford, Richter, Falvey and Alves forming one of the best defense in the league.
The Opening 45
Ottawa Fury had a great start to the match, creating chances and controlling much of for play early on. In the 18th minute Paulo Jr was able to battle for possession down the wing, win the ball and work his way into box where he was able to score off a well placed shot. It was just the start that Fury needed after a strong opening to the match.
Oliver Minatel would double the Fury lead in the 31st minute after receiving the ball just inside the box, slotting away a low shot to the outside post. The Rowdies would respond quickly, with Mkandawire getting enough of the touch on the ball to head it over Peiser from close range and bring the Rowdies back to being just one goal down. The match would enter half time 2-1, with Fury dominating play early on, but slowly relinquishing control to Tampa, who crept into the match as the half progressed.
The Second Half
Fury began to sit back in the second half as it appeared that fatigue was starting to settle in. Fury would create a few chances in the half, with Heinemann getting a great opportunity, and Paulo Jr fanning on a decent chance. Tampa would start to seriously test Peiser and force him to come up big on several occasions to keep Fury in the lead.
Rowdies would get their second goal in the 87th minute as Espinal was able to latch on to a ball on the edge of the six yard box, beat the offside trap and slot the ball through Peiser’s legs. Although Fury had a few opportunities in the second half, it was the Rowdies who always seemed the more likely to score.
Fury have just two points from their last three matches, but it is hardly time to start panicking. Fury still sig atop the Fall Season table and have a great chance of making a run in the NASL Championship. A win will be important in their next match, but with two games on the road ahead of them, Fury will need to regroup and put the frustrating results behind them.
Man Of The Match
Romuald Peiser
Peiser made some big saves and nearly did enough to earn Fury an undeserving win. He continues to be a favourite for the NASL Golden Glove award and a big reason for why Fury are where they are.
