Ottawa Fury FC lost their last home game of the season Saturday, falling 2-1 to fellow expansion side Indy Eleven. Defensive mistakes cost Ottawa Fury the game as they now have just one game remaining in Florida vs Fort Lauderdale.
Fury coach Marc Dos Santos gave both Heinemann and Dantas the start this week, a rare chance for the strikers to feature in the starting lineup together. They were accompanied by Phil Davies on the right wing, with the Canadian being chosen over Haworth and Oliver. Richie Ryan started in central defense with Paterson and Ubiparipovic on either side, while the back for consisted of Woodbine, Trafford, Jarun and Richter.
The Opening 45
Ottawa had a poor first half and were made to pay for it in the 29th minute as a Richter back pass ended up being a perfect through ball for Eleven’s Jhulliam, as he neatly put the ball past Fury keeper Peiser. The mistake by Richter was a rare error by the defender, who has played consistently well since coming to Ottawa from Toronto FC on loan.
Eleven had several chances to double their lead but failed to capitalize on the opportunities as Peiser made a few important saves to keep Fury in the match. Ottawa failed to show up for the first half, lacking any kind of urgency and created few chances. Although the Indy goal came off of a mistake, the score line fairly represented the effort put in by both clubs in the half.
The Second Half
Indy Eleven started the half much like they did the first, allowing few chances for Ottawa while continuing to test Peiser. Donatelli replaced Ubiparipovic early on in the half and helped inject some fire into the Fury squad, as did Haworth when he replaced Davies. Indy Eleven doubled their lead in the 89th minute as midfielder Pineda was able to run into the box unmarked and head the ball past a helpless Peiser.
Ottawa quickly replied in the 91st minute through an Oliver header the was beautifully set up by Vini Dantas, however it was too little too late. Tempers flared after Fury captain Richie Ryan was taken down with a vicious tackle, resulting in the Irishman losing his cool and pushing over his opponent Pineda. Ryan was then shoved over himself by Indy Eleven midfielder Pena, resulting in a straight red for both Ryan and Pena. The match finished 2-1 in favour of the visitors, as Ottawa Fury has only been able to secure one home win this fall season.
It was a poor performance for Ottawa, their second in two weeks. Marc Dos Santos was visibly disappointed following the game, having nothing positive to say about the game.
Ottawa have secured Richie Ryan to a two year extension; however there will need to be some change elsewhere in the squad in the offseason if Ottawa are to be playoff contenders next season.
