FC Edmonton traveled to Ottawa for the first leg of the Amway Canadian Championship preliminary round on Wednesday evening. Edmonton were coming off a big win at home vs Fort Lauderdale while Ottawa played fantastic against Minnesota on Saturday winning 1-0, and both teams needed to be at their best to get a win during this important cup match.
Ottawa saw the return of midfielder Ubiparipovic to the starting line up while Oliver moved out to the wing. Captain Richie Ryan missed the match after being ruled out for several weeks through injury, meaning that Paterson and De Guzman started in the holding midfield positions once again while Wiedeman got the start up front.
FC Edmonton were missing keeper John Smits who was loaned out to Montreal Impact on a short term basis, meaning that Van Oekel was the easy choice for the starting keeper position. Jalali came into the starting eleven alongside Johann Smith, while winger Lance Laing started this match on the bench
The Opening 45
It took Oliver just over a minute to put Fury ahead 1-0, making it the second fastest goal scored in Canadian Championship history. Fury continued to push early on while FC Edmonton struggled to create any chances or generate any shots on net during the first half. Andrew Wiedeman had multiple chances to double Ottawa’s lead, including putting the ball just past the far post and missing a sharp angle shot at an open net.
Nicki Paterson stepped up once again in the defensive midfield position and delivered several dangerous deliveries from free kicks and corners. In the 27th minute Paterson was able to dribble through some defenders on the edge of the box and place a shot on net; however Van Oekel was able to make the save and collect the shot. Ottawa headed into the break with a deserved 1-0 lead, while FC Edmonton failed to break down the Ottawa Fury defense at any point during the first half.
The Second Half
FC Edmonton started the second half looking a lot stronger, while Ottawa Fury continued to press and create chances early on. The match changed for Edmonton when Lance Laing came into the match, igniting the Eddies squad. In the 63rd minute Fury right back Ryan Richter handled the ball in the box and Edmonton won the penalty, however Ottawa keeper Romuald Peiser stepped up big and saved Lance Laing’s penalty kick.
In the 82nd Ameobi sent a shot on net that rebounded off Peiser, and Daryl Fordyce pounced on the opportunity to get an important away goal for Edmonton, tying the game 1-1. In the 87th minute Julian De Guzman played a ball across the Fury eighteen yard box, and through some miscommunication between Fury centre backs Falvey and Alves, FC Edmonton sub Lance Laing was able pounce on the loose ball and slot it past Fury keeper Peiser.
Edmonton put the nail in the coffin when they added a third goal in injuy time, as Laing fed the ball across the six box and Ameobi was able to put to the ball into the empty net. With three goals in Ottawa, Edmonton returns to Alberta with a massive lead heading into the second leg.
FC Edmonton coach Colin Miller discussed Lance Laings performance, saying “He’s certainly been an impact player for us since we moved him from the left back to out wide, and he’s a real handful to play against.” Miller was obviously thrilled with the result and discussed the value of the rivalry between the two NASL clubs and the role it plays in Canadian soccer. “There is a healthy rivalry between the two clubs, and long may that continue. We need it” Miller said. “I love to see the competition between two NASL clubs having a bash at each other, and whoever wins the series go have a bash at the MLS.”
Dos Santos was understandably upset with the result and felt Fury deserved more after playing well before falling apart with 15 minutes left. “Until the 75th minute we were the team who created the most, the best team.” Dos Santos said. “We lost our composure. Mentally we suffered with their tying goal, it’s very disappointing.”
Fury have had several key officiating decisions go against them in recent weeks, and Dos Santos had some choice words following the match. When asked about a missed hand ball decision that would have given Fury a penalty, Dos Santo said “I don’t want to talk about it [officiating]. I’m a very honest guy, and I doubt the credibility and honesty of some people, if they want to give the ticket to Edmonton to qualify then just give them the ticket”
The clubs will face each other in the second leg of this round on April 29th in Edmonton, kicking off at 10pm ET/8pmMT following the Montreal Impact’s Champions League Final second leg. Fury will need to score at least 3 goals to have any chance of advancing, while Edmonton have a bye-week
