2015 begins for Toronto FC with preparation for the upcoming MLS SuperDraft. Like 2009, where the Reds picked up the likes of Sam Cronin, O'Brien White and Stefan Frei, the team has three picks once again to potentially add valuable depth to their roster.
Even though the rise of academies over the last few years has limited the draft from the best players competing in NCAA soccer, there are still talented players available if a team is willing to search beyond the combine. Players recently who have made news such as Miguel Ibarra and John McCarthy should demonstrate there are players at much smaller programs or who are low-profile, who have potential to be top flight North American players.
For this episode of East Side Stand Up, I am joined by ENBSport's Aaron Neilsen, whose knowledge and awareness of NCAA soccer is one of the best in North America. We discuss the current state of TFC ahead of the draft - looking at Tim Bezbatchenko and Greg Vanney at the helm, and now Robin Fraser. We also discuss the current holes in TFC's roster, which leads into the discussion of NCAA soccer and this year's MLS SuperDraft.
We offer our picks for the team, which might not come as a surprise to some, but perhaps they will to others. With so much money spent on the team in 2014, the work left to be done is significant, and getting their draft picks right this year could go a long way in adding the building blocks to a successful team.
