It wasn’t one of the more prolific weekends for Canucks Abroad as despite many of Canada’s key players getting significant playing time, the results mostly went against our internationals and there were few highlight reels to source for inspiration. Despite this, seeing several of the players who were part of the last 3-1 win over Jamaica play over the weekend, as well as others who could not make the camp get in on their team’s results is encouraging to see that in the next two friendlies every player should be in decent match fitness.
While there are not any big stories over the last few days in terms of goals scored, there will be some over the next week and coming ones as well.
Milan Borjan has not got back into the Ludogorets net in the league after his appearance against Liverpool in the Champions League. However, he did make an appearance against second division Botev Vratsa in Cup play mid-week, in net for a 5-1 win. He was on the bench though this weekend as the Bulgarian side lost 3-2 to Leviski Sofia and with their upcoming Champions League match hosting Real Madrid this week, it will be interesting to see if a change is made either for, or after that game.
In England it was not a great weekend as despite David Edgar continuing to start for Birmingham City, finding wins has been a real struggle in the opening month of the season. They lost 2-1 to another poor side so far this season, Fulham, but they have both Millwall and Bolton coming up and those are good opportunities at a win.
Despite not being able to secure a win over the weekend, a 1-1 draw for Besiktas, Atiba Hutchinson’s side still finds themselves near the top of the table. One of only three teams still undefeated, Besiktas have so far benefited from both Galatasaray and Fenerbahce losing over the last two weekends. As has been the case for the last couple of years, the Turkish Super Lig is open to a team outside of the traditional to big Istanbul clubs claiming the title. This week though, Besiktas will have a big Europa League match against Tottenham to see how far they can go and out of the group stage.
