With every Canadian back in the swing of domestic club football after their mid-month friendly against Colombia, now supporters can keep an eye on Canucks abroad as they approach the November friendly against Panama. It was an encouraging weekend for Canadian internationals as several midweek matches in England yielded good performances, while many earned minutes over the weekend to ensure Benito Floro has a core of players who are in game shape.
In England
It was an especially good weekend to note Canadians playing in the UK as several continue to get playing time and have displays of note.
David Edgar’s Birmingham, however, is struggling mightily as they were absolutely trounced on the weekend 8-0 by AFC Bournemouth. Edgar received a straight red in the 7th minute for being the last man back, and after that the floodgates opened. With three losses in a row, City sit in second last in the Championship.
Going down to League One where there are a couple of important Canadian attackers plying their trade. Simeon Jackson’s Coventry City finally got back in the win column as they downed Peterborough United 3-2. Jackson made a substitute appearance to be on for the winner as Coventry are within a game of being above the mid-table mark in League One.
As noted often over the last year, one of Canada’s exciting prospects, Michael Petrasso, continues to impress wherever he is loaned out to. Now with Notts County, Petrasso is getting key minutes and making an impact. On Tuesday he lead the charge and scored a brace and the winning goal in a 3-2 victory over Barnsley. On Saturday he made an appearance in a 1-0 victory over Scunthorpe United. Back to back away wins has put Notts County in third place in League One.
In Germany
Another important country for Canucks abroad, saw some breaking news with regards to Marcel De Jong’s future at Augsburg. Having joined the club in 2010 when they were on the cusp of promotion from the 2.Bundesliga, he helped them achieve that goal the following season. However, especially over the last two seasons, he’s seen limited first team minutes. He was not on the team sheet this weekend in a 2-0 victory over Freiburg and that goes hand in hand with the news and speculation from earlier in the week that he might leave the club in January.
In the divisions below, Andre Hainaults Aalen continue to struggle at the bottom of the table, but he is getting key minutes each week. Hainault has a reputation of being good off set pieces and he was able to score the opening goal this past weekend, but it was not enough as Aalen were eventually dropped 2-1 to Union Berlin.
Randy Edwini-Bonsu has recovered from his recent injury and is back in the Stuttgarter Kickers game day roster. Currently sitting in fifth in the 3.Liga, Edwini-Bonsu made a second half appearance that saw them concede a late goal in a 2-2 draw with Energie Cottubus, who did not have Nik Ledgerwood in the line.
David Edgar is sent off right from the start and then the floodgates open as Birmingham City are humiliated 8-0.
Michael Petrasso stands out for Notts County to score the winner in a 3-2 victory over Barnsley.
Marcus Haber slots home the penalty as Crewe Alexandra earn an important 1-0 win.
Andre Hainault shows good footwork, but his opening goal was not enough as Aalen are dropped 2-1 by Union Berlin.
Iain Hume shows determination as Kerala Blasters get a much needed point in a 1-1 draw.
