As the leagues around Europe get back into the swing of things post winter break, and summer leagues, both in Europe and North America are well into preseason training, anticipation rises as the list of Canucks Abroad will soon increase. Even though the list is short of Canadians currently in-season, there have been positives in terms of minutes played and results of late. Especially from a youth perspective, players such as Daniel Haber, Charlie Trafford, Dylan Carreiro and Samuel Piette are all proving to be regulars for their respective clubs and are in positions to move up should their performances be noticed from their senior side.
In England
While there weren’t any massive fixtures featuring Canadians over this past weekend, there was a match that could go a long way in boosting the confidence of a key CMNT defender. Noted several times this season, one of David Edgar’s lesser displays was against AFC Bournemouth, a match where he was sent off in 7 minutes ahead of an 8-0 route. That match lead to a long spell on the bench, and ultimately a loan away from Birmingham City. Bournemouth are lead by Callum Wilson, a player who could have the Premiership in his near future, and Edgar faced off against this pivotal opponent again with his new on-loan side, Huddersfield Town. It was a highly encouraging result as Bournemouth lead the Championship table, and Edgar went the full 90 in a 1-1 draw.
Down a division in League One, it has been encouraging to see that Marcus Haber’s Crewe Alexandra has found a solid run of form and taken themselves well clear of the relegation zone. Four wins in their last five, it was a big week for Haber, who has been integral in the club’s last two results. On Tuesday he was credited with the game winning assist as he found space on the wing to send in the bal for the goal in a 1-0 victory over Yeovil Town, and Saturday he scored the insurance goal, a well-fought header, to seal a 2-0 victory over Fleetwood Town.
In Turkey
It wouldn’t be an update of Canucks Abroad without checking in on Atiba Hutchinson, and supporters will be happy to see it has been a solid run of late for his Besiktas side, who have a big week ahead of them. Besiktas have taken advantage of small slip ups of late from Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, to put themselves top of the Turkish Super Lig by a single point. This weekend, Hutchinson was back into the starting line-up, going 90 minutes in a thrilling 3-2 win over Bursaspor. Two wins in a row now, Besiktas have been awarded a late penalty for the win, with Demba Ba converting. Besiktas now have to juggle big Europa League knockout fixtures as they face off against Liverpool, while having to travel away to 14th placed Eskisehirspor next Sunday to try and stay atop the table.
Marcus Haber heads in the insurance goal as Crewe down Fleetwood Town 2-0.
Haber gets space down the wing to cross in the winner in a 1-0 win over Yeovil Town.
Kevin Aleman scores his first goal in Costa Rica in a 4-1 loss to Limon.
Lucas Cavallini remains consistent in Uruguay as he scores again for Fenix in a 1-1 draw with his old club, Juventud.
