The 2014 NCAA women's championship begins this Friday, November 14th, and 44 Canadians from 23 schools will compete in the 64 team tournament.
Of particular interest to women's national team supporters are Kailen Sheridan, Ashley Campbell, Janine Beckie, Ashley Lawrence, Amandine Pierre-Louis, Kadeisha Buchanan and Kinley McNicoll, all of whom played for Canada at this past summer’s under 20 Women’s World Cup. Lawrence and Buchanan also have 9 and 24 senior team caps, respectively.
The list also includes numerous past youth internationals, including goalkeepers Sabrina D’Angelo and Geneviève Richard, defenders Larisa Staub, Sophie Therien and Ally Courtnall, and midfielders Amy Pietrangelo, Jordyn Listro, Chantale Campbell and Nicole Setterlund.
One of the most impressive Canadians in the NCAA this season has been Janine Beckie, who scored 13 goals for Texas Tech and was awarded Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year honours. Beckie, who lived in Saskatchewan for three years before moving to Colorado with her family when she was quite young, scored two goals for Canada at this past summer’s U20 World Cup. In a recent interview with Sandra Prusina at Northern Kick, WNT coach John Herdman said he may bring Beckie into camp with the senior team before next year’s World Cup.
The news that Canadian national team veteran Diana Matheson tore her ACL a few weeks ago in one of Canada’s friendlies against reigning World Champions Japan is a huge blow to the team, as Matheson has been Canada’s best player for the last two years. Now that she will be out for a number of months, it is likely we will see more of West Virginia’s Ashley Lawrence, who has played sporadic minutes for John Herdman’s side since earning her first international cap in January of 2013. She has been an assist machine at the NCAA level, with a team leading seven assists this season, as well as four goals.
Some notable omissions from this year’s tournament include Canadians Rebecca Quinn (Duke), Nichelle Prince and Lindsay Agnew (Ohio State), and Emma Fletcher, Summer Clarke and Jordane Carvery (LSU). The University of Memphis, with eleven Canadians on its roster, including forward Valerie Sanderson, who played significant minutes in the U20 World Cup last summer, also failed to qualify.
Northern Kick also compiled a long list of awards and honours that Canadian women won this NCAA season.
