The U-20 WWC is taking place August 5-24, 2014 in Edmonton, Toronto, Montréal and Moncton and the WWC 2015 is running from June 6-July 5, 2015 in Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montréal and Moncton. As the tournaments are quickly approaching, catch up on some of the latest news.
FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Canada 2014
- Canada’s U-20 women’s team capped off a recent camp in British Columbia with two friendlies against their Korea Republic counterparts. Kadeisha Buchanan and Ashley Campbell scored in a 2-2 draw on June 7, while Nichelle Prince got Canada’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss on June 10. The team will reconvene June 24-July 10 in Vancouver before traveling to Mexico July 16-21 for two friendlies.
FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015
- At the Canadian Museum of Nature, the Official Mascot of the WWC 2015 was introduced as Shuéme, a female Great White Owl. Shuéme’s French-inspired name is a tribute to Canada’s bilingual status, inclusiveness and multiculturalism. The Mascot is said to embody the spirit of the WWC, symbolizing peace and fair play, and characterized as sporty and confident, with precise control and agility.
- Celebrations across the country were held on June 6 marking the one year milestone until the start of the tournament. For the occasion, 3 metre tall One Year To A Greater Goal countdown clocks were unveiled, which will be displayed for the next 365 days in host cities at: BC Place in Vancouver, City Hall in Edmonton, The Forks in Winnipeg, City Hall in Ottawa, Stade Olympique in Montréal, and Champlain Place mall in Moncton.
- Phase one of WWC 2015 ticket sales will begin September 10 with Stadium Passports (i.e. tickets packages for all games in a particular host city) and Stadium Half Passes. Of note, purchasers of these packages will have pre-sale access to tickets for the championship final at BC Place.
- The Official Draw will take place on December 6 at the Museum of History in Gatineau, Québec.
- In addition to Kara Lang, “the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Health, Regional Minister for Northern Alberta and Member of Parliament for Edmonton-Spruce Grove”, was announced as an Event Ambassador of the WWC 2015.
- Working towards next year's tournament, head coach John Herdman called up 22 players for CanWNT camp and a friendly against Germany, the second ranked team in the World. Canada vs. Germany kicks off at BC Place on June 18 (10pm ET/7pm PT) and broadcast live on Sportsnet One.
- In WWC 2015 Qualifiers, Switzerland was the first European team to claim a spot in the tournament, also marking their first WWC appearance. The winner of each group will qualify (September 2013-September 2014), while the top-four second place teams will be in a playoff (October 25-November 27) for the 8th and final UEFA WWC spot.
- The Asian representatives were determined in May with Australia, China, Japan, Korea Republic and Thailand being victorious.
- The winner of Oceania qualifying September 10-20 will be the lone OFC nation advancing.
- CONCACAF and CONMEBOL have three and two guaranteed berths, respectfully, while the fourth place finishers of the former and third place finishers of the latter will compete in a playoff for the final spot. The CONCACAF Women's Championship will take place October 16-24 in north-eastern United States.
