Buoyed by the midweek 3-1 victory over Jamaica, Canadians went back overseas returning to their domestic clubs and continue on with the start of a new fall/winter season. Not only are supporters feeling confident, but the players as well might have taken the result back and put in good performances this past weekend. While not every Canadian saw action, likely due to missing a week of training at the club level, some key players for Canada went right back to their team and contributed either with minutes, or in a few instances directly effecting the scoreline.
In England
One of Canada’s biggest issues over recent years is determining who is that go to striker who is going to put it in the back of the net. Simeon Jackson has been a name many have been aware of for years, but he has yet to come off with frequency for Canada. After a difficult last two years where he could not quite break through at the top flight in England and Germany, he has returned to League One at Coventry City to try and regain the prowess he showed with Gillingham as well as Norwich City when they were in the Championship.
This weekend Jackson returned to his club and while he didn’t get the start, was subbed in down the stretch and found himself in the right place at the right time to pounce on a Chris Weale fumble to poke home the winning goal in a 2-1 result over Yeovil Town. With the win, Coventry City are off to a decent start and are sitting in fifth place. Their next two games are good opportunities to stay at the top as they will be away to Scunthorpe United and Rochdale, both in the bottom half of the table.
While he didn’t get a call-up this time around, Marcus Haber has continued to get consistent playing time for Crewe Alexandra. On Saturday they won their first game of the season with Haber assisting on the opener as they took down Port Vale 2-1 at home. They will travel to take on Jackson’s opposition from this weekend, Yeovil Town then to MK Dons for the next two fixtures.
In Germany
There are still a handful of Canadians competing in Germany, however, there is only one left at the top flight level and that is Marcel De Jong. However, despite scoring a beautiful free kick against Jamaica, he has yet to break into the squad and earn meaningful minutes with his domestic club, Augsburg. Unfortunately his performance midweek did not translate into an opportunity this weekend as he was a spectator on the bench watching his team defeat Olivier Occean’s former club Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0.
The lower divisions offer some more frequent performers as defender Andre Hainault continues to be a regular at Aalen in the 2.Bundesliga, but had a tough outing as his side were downed 4-1 by Ingolstadt.
Randy Edwini-Bonsu might be the most exciting player to track in Germany right now as he looks to be an important piece of 3.Liga Stuttgarter Kickers this season. He returned from a good game for Canada to sub in the second half in an early-season promotion battle against MSV Duisburg. Stuttgarter lost 2-0 on the road, but have back to back home games coming up where they should be able to maintain their position in the table.
Simeon Jackson is in the right place at the right time to score the winner as Coventry City down Yeovil Town 2-1.
Marcus Haber heads down the ball for the opening goal as Crewe Alexandra win their first game of the season 2-1.
