The Whitecaps were unable to end the extremely long Houston Dynamo undefeated streak at BBVA Stadium. Truth be told, they definitely should have.
The Good
A lot of chances created.
Chance Creation
Overall, there are very few positives to take away from this match in my opinion, but one thing that stood out to me was the amount of scoring chances created by the Whitecaps. Although the execution was sub-par, the creation of scoring opportunities was excellent. But, of course, that is only half the job. Not to take away from Darren Mattocks' brilliant goal, the actual turning point for this match was when the young Jamaican missed a sitter of a chance, which followed with the Dynamo coming back from behind to win.
Camilo Sanvezzo
Another positive to take away from this match was the quality performance from Camilo coming off the bench. He created scoring chances immediately and almost pushed the Caps to tie the game up. Camilo also struck a remarkable freekick which, by the sheer luck of Tally Hall and the Dynamo, hit both posts and somehow stayed out.
The Bad
Poor possession and defending.
Lack Of Possession And Cheap Giveaways
With the Dynamo being known for their ability to control the ball for large quantities of time, naturally this would occur in this game, especially at BBVA Compass Stadium. Houston's amount of possession finally broke the Caps down and the Dynamo's unbelievable undefeated steak at home lives on. When the Caps did win possession, they often gave it up cheaply and did not make the most of it. One of the few times the Whitecaps kept possession effectively, they set up a gorgeous goal which gave them the 1-0 lead.
Defensive Breakdowns
The Whitecaps were definitely lacking defensively in this match as well, which was a major reason for Houston's two second half goals. There were many instances where the Caps defended poorly, especially when the Dynamo scored their second goal, which saw the Whitecaps caught ball-watching.
The Ugly
Execution problems linger.
Brutal Execution
Poor execution has been the biggest problem for the Caps and has been lingering since opening week. The Whitecaps missed a few glorious chances and when Mattocks was stopped from scoring a perfect opportunity by Tally Hall, the game was flipped on its head. This goes to show the effect that the inability to score has on matches. This problem will likely continue until the Whitecaps can get in the habit of scoring their easy chances.
