The Good
Darren Mattocks
Darren Mattocks made a substitute appearance in this match and played for the first time in months. He came on and had an immediate impact on a Whitecaps side that was down and out. Mattocks was explosive and put in some serious hard work that was rare in this match against the Rapids. It would not hurt to give Mattocks the start against the Galaxy. Or at least, get him on the pitch a little earlier if he is needed like he was this weekend. Darren Mattocks and Martin Rennie came out and said that he had his best training session ever this past week. That shows that he wants to get back on the pitch desperately. The regular starters better begin to step it up again and watch their backs, or Mattocks could steal their spot very soon.
The Bad
Daigo Kobayashi and YP Lee
YP Lee and Daigo Kobayashi especially had very poor performances not only this weekend, but in the last few prior to this match as well. It seems as if Lee's age is starting to catch up with him and his defending has become extremely lazy. The only reason the Rapids managed to score their first goal was thanks to some very poor defending from YP Lee. The Korean full back just allowed Deshorn Brown to get away from him and get a head to the incoming ball. Martin Rennie must begin to consider other options within the club, as well as on the transfer market.
Kobayashi has easily been one of the biggest let downs for Caps fans so far this season. With a goal and an assist in his first two matches, the Japanese midfielder initially looked quite promising. Since then, he has been almost invisible in the majority of matches he has taken part in. It seems as if he does not want to be in possession of the ball, even though that is the single reason why the club signed him in the first place. It looks like that will likely be the last start he will get this season, or maybe his last start ever for the club?
The Ugly
Missed chances
The Whitecaps completely out chanced the Rapids in this match, but did not manage to even put one in the back of the net. Fans thought the days of poor finishing were behind us but apparently that issue is still lingering. Especially with the form that Kenny Miller, Russell Teibert and Camilo have been in, it is almost strange to see this problem arise once again. Hopefully this is just something rare that will only come up from time to time, and not something that will dash the Whitecaps playoff dreams this season.
