Caldwell speaks to RedNation Online and reveals his intent to live in Canada and stay with Toronto FC.
The will-he-won’t-he mini-saga continues at Toronto FC, as potential news on Caldwell’s future at the club made for an interesting press conference from Ryan Nelsen. During the post-game press conference, Nelsen teased that news on Caldwell’s status would be coming soon, but didn’t confirm or deny a potential deal just yet.
“There will be news on that,” said Nelsen, with his trademark (and cheeky) smile. “I think there will be pretty good news. If we had Steven Caldwell at the start of the season, I think we’d be in a different spot right now.”
After Toronto FC’s 1-0 loss to Real Salt Lake, Caldwell spoke about his relationship with Ryan Nelsen, and the expectations his coach has, and dropped a little hint about his future at Toronto FC.
“I’m well aware of what he wants from me, what he expects me to bring, and hopefully he’s pleased with what I’m doing,” said Caldwell. “I’m sure he is pleased, I’ve got a good relationship with him and I look forward to working with him for a long time.”
On Canada Day weekend, Caldwell spoke about his time in Canada, a different experience from his days in England, and Caldwell couldn’t be more pleased with the reception he received across the pond.
“I’m thoroughly enjoying it!” said Caldwell. “I’ve been made to feel more than welcome by everybody involved in the football club and around the city. I’ve only got great things to say about Toronto as a place and Canada as a country – I thoroughly enjoy it.”
“I’m looking forward to staying and bringing my family here and living here, experiencing all the great things that this city brings and this football club brings, and hopefully I can repay that by performing on the field and doing what this club wants me to do,” Caldwell added.
“No, nothing’s been signed, but we’re very close,” said Caldwell. “Hopefully we can have that finalized in the next day or two, get it all behind us and we can all concentrate and focus on winning football games. It’s not about any one individual at this club, it’s about being a unit, a together squad. We have the makings of a very good team but we have o be more ruthless and more professional every second, every day to achieve the success we feel is coming to us.”
It looks like Caldwell may be set to stay at Toronto FC after all. If a deal cannot be struck, however, Caldwell could have just played his final game in a red shirt. If so, Danny Califf suddenly becomes an important figure in the backline once more. Make sure to keep an eye out on RedNation Online for more updates as the story develops.
