Day 12! The final day of the TFC Christmas countdown is finally here!
We’ll start off with the formalities of course; thank you for sticking around and reading this list, and I wish you all happy holidays!
We’ve wished for a lot this Christmas season: defenders, midfielders, and strikers are needed; chip buttys, doctors and trophies a bonus; drafts, winning streaks and even memories, all playing to the necessary changes at the club we call our very own.
Today, we wish for something far simpler, and far more complicated to achieve – happiness.
A happy 12th man, once more – this is not an easy thing for a club to deliver, nor can a fat, jolly old man in a red suit bring it to the team, either. This is a wish that requires a lot of hard work to pull off.
It’s no secret that those loyal supporters of Toronto FC endured a painful 2012 season, and that, come 2013, there are those who have chosen not to return to BMO Field. The supporters’ sections looked a shadow of their former selves, though not for the lack of trying – the constant losses overpowered any muster of positivity or joy that, say, a tailgate could provide.
The spark for happiness was lost in 2012. It’s time to reignite it.
This will take three efforts from Toronto FC to achieve – results, consistency and style. We’ve talked already, on day nine, of the importance of a solid start to the 2013 season, or, on day five, of the importance of a fifth Canadian Championship. However, results can be as easy as winning more than losing, in maintaining a lead to the final whistle, in scoring multiple goals, winning a deadlocked draw late on, beating those easy teams by considerable margins, making it known that Toronto FC is a club that knows how to get the job done.
Results matter. One or two good games won’t cut it. These results must be consistent, too. It must happen often enough for the odds of my ticket producing a positive result to be higher. If Toronto FC tickets were betting slips, the stands would be far, far emptier. Consistency is necessary!
Style can come later; it is something that was talked of a lot in 2012, while ignoring the lack of results. Style will attract old fans and bring in new ones.
Let’s make the 12th man smile again, sing and chant and grow passionate once more.
