There is a fresh batch of updates on the on-going transfer saga of Newell’s Old Boys forward Maximiliano Urruti. The Argentine hitman has been linked with Toronto FC for weeks now, but new tweets and a report from Newell’s has shed new light on the situation. Reports from Argentina had Urruti released from the club, with allegations of unpaid wages being the reason, but the club believes otherwise.
First up is a report via Newell’s Old Boys’ official website which stated, roughly, the following:
“In regards to Maximiliano Urruti, the terms of his contract state that he still has one year left to complete . The club does not owe a debt to Urruti. The club believes that the player is missing his contractual obligations and must report to work under the first division coaching staff. Should this not happen, Newell’s Old Boys will exercise the appropriate legal measures/mechanisms to defend their rights.”
This is the first time that either club has made an official statement regarding the potential transfer. Earlier this week, TFC club president Kevin Payne spoke to press regarding the deal, acknowledging it’s existence and adding a continued hope that a deal could be signed before the August 8th transfer window deadline. However, Newell’s Old Boys believe firmly that Urruti still has a year left in his contract and any attempt to sign the player may yield a legal response from the club. While the CSA and TFC have allegedly been informed of the ramifications, the player or his agent have yet to reply.
Second, a Twitter feed from TyC Sports producer/journalist César Luis Merlo revealed some new information on the transfer and the legal situation around the club, translated here:
“Today, Newell’s Old Boys (NOB) sent Toronto FC a document – with another copy sent to the Canadian Soccer Association – regarding the imminent transfer of Maximiliano Urruti.
1) Urruti has a contract with NOB, which runs until June of 2014 – both Toronto FC and Urruti can be sanctioned economically and sportingly if Urruti signs for the club.
2) NOB is warning Toronto FC of damages/compensation since Urruti left the club one day before the tournament kicked off.
3) NOB is considering a fine of $150,000 U.S. (translators note: this figure could be $1.5 million or even $150 million – the shorthand used for the tweet’s number was unclear) for Urruti to train with the club due to a breach of contract.
4) NOB is telling Toronto FC to stop chasing Urruti without negotiating with the club first, and violating the rules.”
So, it looks like Toronto FC may be up for a legal battle against Newell’s Old Boys, who believe that Urruti’s departure is in violation of the team and the player’s contract. Toronto FC expects Urruti to arrive on Tuesday but if legal drama arises, Toronto FC may not be able to complete the signing on time.
In either case, the transfer saga continues at Toronto FC, with Urruti’s on-again, off-again story continuing to chug along with updates springing forth on a day-to-day basis. Will the Argentine forward ever sign with Toronto FC, and if so, will there be ramifications for the club and the player?
Meanwhile, reports from various publications in Italy have linked Toronto FC with another Maximiliano, this time, from Atalanta in Serie A. Argentina midfielder Maximiliano Moralez, 26, has been linked with a big-money move to Toronto, who are interested in making the creative playmaker a Designated Player, according to both “illsussidario.net” and “TuttoMercatoWeb”.
While Toronto FC continues to pursue Urruti and Moralez, one thing is certain – the club is in full on transfer mode. Expect news to break any moment and make sure to keep an eye out on RedNation Online for more updates as they happen.
