The Montreal Impact announced today that they have filled in the vacant third goalkeeper spot by signing Academy player Maxime Crépeau.
The 18-year-old joins league veteran Troy Perkins and 26-year-old Evan Bush as the team's goalkeepers this season. Crépeau beat out 2013 draft pick Brad Stuver for the job.
“I am very pleased to be joining the pro team. I hope that this is the beginning of a long adventure,” said Crépeau via the club's website. “It’s a dream come true following a lot of hard work. Now, I need to continue to work hard to further my development. I’d like to thank Philippe Eullaffroy, Youssef Dahha, Mauro Biello and all those who believed in me, trained me and helped me grow.”
Crépeau, as mentioned by sporting director Nick De Santis in the Impact's press release, will be occupying the third goalkeeper role, left vacant by Greg Sutton's retirement. Crépeau has spent the entire pre-season training with the first team, starting with the Italy trip back in November 2012.
The Greenfield Park, Quebec native should easily be able to integrate into the senior squad. The Impact's goalkeeper coach for this year is Youssef Dahha. Dahha has worked with Crépeau for a few years in the Academy. Dahha has been with the Impact since 2004.
Crépeau joined the Impact's Academy in 2010. He most recently represented the U21 team in the Canadian Soccer League.
At an international level, Crépeau has represented the Canadian national team since he was 15-years-old. Most recently, he was part of the U20 team at CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Mexico. Montreal now has 26 players under contract for 2013. Crépeau becomes the fourth Canadian on the roster and fourth Academy player to join the senior ranks after Karl W. Ouimette, Maxim Tissot and Wandrille Lefèvre. At 18-years-old, he is also the youngest player to sign with the pro MLS team.
