Neither Toronto FC nor the Montreal Impact are standing still with respect to their rosters ahead of their next meeting in the Canadian Championship later this month, as both teams have pulled some strings to add some argentine flair to their offensive arsenals.
The Montreal Impact announced today that the club has acquired 19-year-old Argentinean midfielder Maximiliano Rodriguez, who will be on loan with the club for the 2013 MLS season. As per league policy, details of the agreement were not disclosed.
Rodriguez joins the Impact from Argentinos Juniors of the Primera A (Argentina’s first division). He was part of Atlético Madrid’s youth academy between 2007 and 2009, in Spain, before returning to Argentina.
"He is a young player that has a lot of potential," said Impact sporting director Nick De Santis via the Montreal Impact website on Monday. "We have been following him for over six months and I also had the chance to see him play in Argentina. He is a technically gifted player with a lot of raw talent. We feel that with some time on the field training with our experienced players and coaches, his talent can be refined. He is a young developmental project with a big upside."
Following on the back heel of Montreal’s announcement, Toronto FC are expected to add not one but two Argentine players to their roster, with several credible news outlets reporting that in addition to finalizing their deal to acquire Maximiliano Urruti of Argentina’s Newell Old Boys, the Reds will also acquire 21-year-old midfielder Matias Laba of Argentinos Juniors of Buenos Aires.
While it likely won’t start something akin to a Falkland’s War between the English and Argentine players on Toronto’s roster, the additions of Urruti and Laba will likely great improve TFC’s depth while at the same time upping the intensity with respect to the competition for spots in Toronto FC’s starting eleven.
