I have some concerns regarding the direction that the Canadian teams took in this year’s 2013 MLS SuperDraft. Certainly we can all have a difference of opinion and hopefully Bekker, Welshman, Mannah, Hurtado and Smith prove me wrong and have good MLS careers and help lead their teams to successful seasons in 2013 and beyond. That being said, if I had a chance to ask the management teams of Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver about their selections in this draft, these are the question I would ask.
Toronto FC
Do you think Bekker is a better player than Farrell or Alvarez?
If you liked Kyle Bekker so much, why didn't the team invite him to camp last summer so he could qualify as a homegrown player?
In his senior season Bekker scored one goal on a team that under achieved. Were you concerned about this in your evaluation of the player?
In college a large amount of Bekker’s goals and assists were generated by taking free kicks. Do you feel he will be given similar opportunities for TFC?
Are you concerned about the pressure to succeed that Bekker will receive by being drafted 3rd overall?
Does it concern you that Welshman only scored three goals during his junior year of college?
Welshman played against what are generally conceded to be weaker teams at the collegiate level. Do you feel the lack of top competition hurts his possibly ability to adapt at the MLS level?
Do you think Welshman is a better player than Thomas, Bennentt, Spencer and Sandoval, who were available and who all have a better track record in college?
What role will Bekker and Welshman play in the 2013 season and what are your expectations?
Vancouver Whitecaps
By drafting two forwards it seems you have little hope in Omar Salgado developing into a MLS player?
How much information did you have on Kekuta Manneh before the draft/combine?
Are you concerned about Mannah’s on field disciplinary record, concerns that he showed at the youth level?
Hurtado was projected by most as a late 2nd Round/Supplemental pick. Why did you draft him so early?
Both Hurtado and Mannah are 5'9. Are you concerned about that lack of height and do you see them as wingers at the pro level?
You could have drafted Walker Zimmerman, who is projected as a top central defender in the league. Why did you pass on him?
Montreal
None of the club’s four picks were Generation Adidas, which means all contracts you provide will count against the cap. Is this a concern?
You drafted Blake Smith ahead of much more highly touted players such as Zavaleta and Johnson, as well as ahead of midfielder Dillon Powers. Do you think Smith is a better player?
What position do you see Blake Smith playing at the MLS level?
Fernando Monge was perceived to be a supplemental pick at best. Why did you take him so high?
Is there a reason why you took Monge over his much more highly touted college teammate Ryan Hollingshead?
What is your assessment of Paolo DelPiccolo and his development into an MLS player?
Why draft Stuver over many other goalies ranked higher in the draft board, such as Belshaw, Goodwin, Meves and Soffner?
