After a disappointing result at home to Puerto Rico, the National Team disbanded and returned to their club teams to compete in this weekend’s fixtures. While in North America Julian De Guzman and Terry Dunfield were given a break after back to back games, the Canucks in Europe were offered no such reprieve. However, given how noticeable the level of play the likes of David Edgar, Olivier Occean and Lars Hirschfeld brought to the table, continued starts and ninety minutes should result in improved performances in the red and white.
In Norway
As noted, the number one Canadian keeper returned back to his club in Oslo, got the start and put in a sound performance. Valerenga will likely look at 2011 as a lost opportunity, as perennial table toppers Rosenborg slipped badly in the table and form, and the championship was up for grabs. Finishing second last season, Valerenga could have make a strong run at the title, but fell behind early in the year. However, they have won four of their last five and now have climbed back to the third and final Europa League spot. One point behind second place Tromso and a point ahead of Rosenborg, the final four games of the campaign will be ones to keep an eye on. Hischfeld did well to keep his team near the top as he earned a clean sheet in their 3-0 victory over Viking.
Another Canadian to note, Chris Pozniak, continues to get regular minutes for his club Haugesund, who have quietly kept pace with the top sides and are only one game behind Rosenborg. Pozniak went the full ninety as they beat Fredrikstad 3-2.
In Denmark
With Will Johnson missing action and there being little athleticism in the Canadian midfield in his absence, one option of a player who has regained fitness and going the full ninety each week is Patrice Bernier. Known for a strong work ethic and loads of stamina he might be worth a look come November if Johnson is not available. While he is not at the most high profile Danish side in the struggling Lyngby, he has consistently played each week. While his goal this weekend could not secure a rare victory, it signaled he is still able to compete and contribute at a good professional level.
Lars Hirshfeld keeps a clean sheet as Valerenga keeps pace for a Europa League spot in a 3-0 win over Viking:
Olivier Occean didn't score but set up the insurance goal as his side won 2-0 and remained atop the 2.Bundesliga:
