The weekend has passed that often signals the end to the European fall/winter season seeing Chelsea hold off and ultimately best Bayern Munich, in Munich. For Canadians competing in Europe, there was on game left on that calendar as Milan Borjan’s club FC Vaslui were in a critical fixture to end their season either in the Champions League or Europea League.
In Romania
The disappointment that was felt after PSV narrowly missed out on the Champions League has been redeemed by Milan Borjan’s amazing run to finish off the 2011/12 season in Romania.
After a very tough fall in 2011, Borjan moved over to Vaslui in March and immediately took over the number one keeper role. Sixteen appearances and seven clean sheets later, he could be en route to the Champions League next year. A midweek 2-1 victory as well as 1-0 victory on Sunday over Universitatea Cluj, coupled with CFR Cluj drawing 1-1 with Steaua Bucharest, put them in the lone spot of second place in the Liga 1 table.
Now it will be a matter of seeing if Borjan can make his move permanent and see if he can capitalize on the exposure brought with competing in Europes elite club tournament. Whether it be Turkey or Romania, Borjan needs to look at the football landscape in Eastern Europe and do what he can to move to a more financially secure, and less corrupt league. If he is able to stay with Vaslui and impress in the Champions League, this would be the ideal scenario to keep building his career.
Milan Borjan's FC Vaslui win 1-0 to finish second in the Liga 1 table and secure a Champions League spot:
