Last weekend would be a tough one to follow after a breakout series of performances, and it was much quieter this first week of December. However, with a few players still on the road to recovery, seasons’ coming to a close, the winter break looming, the continent was overall quieter than it had been since August.
It wasn’t completely silent for Canucks overseas as several components to the National side still were able to get in and contribute to their club team’s results.
Turkey has become as good a place to start with three Canadians getting starting minutes every week. Josh Simpson and Mike Klukowski’s Manisaspor might have only secured a 0-0 draw with Mersin Idmanyurdu, but it was enough to claim sole ownership of third place in the SuperLig. Milan Borjan continues his education between the sticks, and while a 2-2 draw with Trabzonspor is a decent result, Borjan had a tough night as a misplayed cross lead to his opponent’s second goal.
In Denmark
Montreal Impact fans will be watching closely the form of midfielder Patrice Bernier, who appears to have recovered well from an injury earlier in the year and has been a consistent part of Danish club Lyngby’s season. While they have not had the quality to stay out of the bottom of the table, Bernier has been a constant and added in a goal this weekend as they fell to Issey Nakajima-Farran’s former club, AC Horsens 2-1.
In Germany
Germany produced positive results as Kevin McKenna is another name who is healing and came on as a late sub for FC Koln and was a part of their last gasp scoring effort that saw them draw with Stuttgart 2-2. The other Canadian in the Bundesliga, Marcel De Jong, looks to be nearing full fitness as he made the bench for the first time in over a month.
As always, the player to watch closest is Olivier Occean who continues his fine form with Greuther Furth in the 2.Bundesliga. After dropping points on Monday to Fortuna Dusseldorf, they came back and Occean opened the scoring in a 3-0 victory over Hansa Rostock. Occean now has 10 goals in seventeen appearances and has been integral in his club keeping pace with the top of the division.
Occean keeps up his scoring pace and opens up the account for Greuther Furth as they defeat Hansa Rostock 3-0:
Patrice Bernier's touch can't salvage a point as Lyngby lose to
AC Horsens 2-1.
